Refrigerators everywhere would be bare. It would be a sad sad world. But... lucky you... here I am. I am a maker of magnets, savior of refrigerators and protector of outdated artwork and lists. Protect Your Brand!

Now that Stuck Together Magnets is steady rolling and has become my full time job, I have become very conscious of my brand and its place in the world. It is a very tricky thing, building a brand. It is so much more than buying a logo and slapping it on a business card. It is a reputation built on a great product, stellar customer service, and constant progress and ambition. My brand is like my child. I created it, brought it up through diapers (phew!), and now I am nurturing it as it grows up. I am always thinking about my brand and always work to make sure that it is growing up to be a "good kid."

As a business owner, I pay a lot more attention to other brands and I am always surprised when I see a company seemingly blind to the damage they are doing to their names through neglect and poor customer service. I am currently a customer of a group of people who are trying to build a brand. I'm not naming names cause I am not that girl.... but... these people are stressing me out! I want to write countless emails to the head of the company and tell him how much his brand suffers when things don't go as promised, products are not as advertised and customers are disrespected. Why work so hard just to leave a bad taste in your customers' mouths when it is all said and done? It is a hard thing to watch, but it makes me pay more attention to my own business practices.

I strive to always protect the brand I have built by being consistent, reliable and providing a product that people will come back for. I am so proud of Stuck Together Magnets and I will always work hard to make sure it is a "good kid" with a happy Momma.

Things you can do to protect your brand:

1. Always respond to inquires in a timely manner. Nothing pisses off a customer more than being ignored.

2. Make a good product that is worth what you charge.

3. Go the extra mile when you can or when it is necessary. Sometimes it is that little extra something that makes you memorable.

4. Use a respectful tone in your communication, even when you don't want to. Sometimes, yes, customers are wrong. But, stay professional and treat them with respect. Even if the transaction was not perfect, they will remember your manner. Surprise them by being kind, even if they are communicating with frustration.

5. Evolve. Progress. Grow. Expand.

6. Love your brand! Be proud of what you have built. Talk about it and show it off.

I hope 2012 is a splendiferious year for all! I am starting off the new year with some new designs at Stuck Together and lots of new ideas for the coming months. 2011 was a great year but I wanna make this baby FLY! One of my resolutions is to blog more and increase my visibility. Sometimes I get so caught up in my little studio that I forget there is a whole wide world out there. I'll probably be a hermit when I'm old. A magnet hermit.

I wish everyone a happy and prosperous year filled with all good things!Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-2189017596418915302011-10-23T11:51:00.001-04:002011-10-23T11:53:04.350-04:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLcJtVnqrmUhn1BCO8nyHvreQ0a5M0ILtC80t-s6I-hrrV4A9kD9CnAu5Yi6-lzfdPJ3bwajs7NPzML6vAZeBs08LSKTyxub3TZ9wCmMx8qnupgjLoEKx7YCd8JDuuj278tIjAkBTj9mY/s400/Happy+Day+Coupon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666716203026394178" />Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-83796479780177726342011-09-17T19:08:00.010-04:002011-09-20T02:00:10.112-04:00Wholesale Mania!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 155px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYBsVhzvSmeeGi-wcPurolMIAi6M3B-e4zzbiRo2tmTge872FOmyDhUPlM518WTRtTO7T7bAOqzV0LmbRUvwvtSEMvySGcLgJg49cK90Hi2XdeeXW5W_rVENb_4GVrG47deTVzn1xdUrc/s200/Postcard+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653473913334816610" />
Time to venture into the world of wholesale! You want to have a successful shop, daily sales, make a profit and build a customer base. These are all awesome goals and each very valuable in developing a successful creative business. Goals provide guidance and accountability and help our businesses grow when they are met. What does it take to win this game and get everything that we want?

Here are a few easy steps to help you use goals to maximize your creative business potential everyday:

1. Don't Overdo It
One of the most common mistakes when setting goals is to set too many for yourself. An impossible and unattainable number. I have seen many people make daily "to do" lists that are a mile long. How can anyone complete that many tasks in one day? The first step in maximizing your goals is to decide which are priority and which will get your the most return for your time and effort. There is a lot of discussion about how many daily goals are the "right" number of daily goals. I think that all depends on your schedule and work ethic. Let's say that somewhere between 4 and 7 daily goals would be attainable and reasonable.

2. Write Them Down
This seems silly sometimes, but writing your daily goals on paper is a very powerful thing. A written list creates a tangible accountability for what you have planned. It is concrete and you can't stuff it in the back of your mind like we often do with daily planned tasks that go unfinished. Your subconscious will thank you!

3. Scale Your Goals to Fit Your Stage
Make a point to set goals for yourself that are attainable within the current progression of your creative business. These daily goals should be task driven and correspond to your stage of business. Setting lofty long term goals is great, but writing them on a to do list everyday can become defeating. Keep it relative so you can be successful.

4. Answer All of the Questions
Setting a goals answers the "what" question. A goal is a statement of WHAT you want to do. Do not forget to answer the "how" "when" and "why" questions. These are just as important and you will find that asking these additional questions will make the goal itself much easier to achieve. If you are honest with your answers, and only goals you will be focusing on are ones that are going to bring you progress in a reasonable amount of time.

Good luck!!Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-38856004043490087332011-03-20T13:18:00.013-04:002011-03-20T13:56:09.468-04:00Building Your Brand<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5_G0CaI2plRA17fVGtQr4q9PNnQ86CtnQ2laGBbYyftxnZbABUh55DPuDEYkFfE9AMQn2C5J859PP-51b7VYnTXfAK9OEjvBpu6sviQoBB_XHiz4KT2jyHbk6ty-FbX1wqYCoftORaEg/s320/Brand.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586221876069974018" />
I don't think branding crossed my mind once until I opened Stuck Together. When you are out and about in the world, I think it is just something you take for granted. But, every retailer has a brand. They have a team of people who work on creating, building, maintaining and progressing that brand. While you may not have a team of people working on your creative business or craft, it is a good idea and a smart business move to spend some time developing a brand for your product.

Brand is defined as:
"A brand is the identity of a specific product, service, or business. A brand can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity - it affects the personality of a product, company or service."

Here are some helpful steps to help you start in the journey of creating a brand for your shop!

1. LOGO! Create a logo that is only yours and use that logo on EVERYTHING you make, advertise, create and promote. People will begin to recognize your logo and associate it with your products and business. This is a good thing! You want people to know who you are and a logo is the first step.

2. Be cohesive! It is important that you follow a cohesive style with your products. This can be accomplished through using consistent materials, colors or procedures. They should also be photographed in a cohesive way with the same backgrounds and lighting. You can see this in many of the successful shops on Etsy and other creative marketplaces.

3. Create a line! One of a kind items have their place, but you will find that successful brands have a "line" of products that can be recreated again and again. This saves you time and money. You can buy supplies in bulk or wholesale when you are planning to recreate an item. Time is saved when you only have to make one sample to photograph rather than many OOAK items that each need to be photographed. This is smart business!

4. Progress! You can progress your brand by adding new items which support and evolve your current lines. These new items should still be recognizable as yours, through the cohesion and logo placement, but they are NEW. People love new! But do not sacrifice all the the branding work you have done. It should all "go" together. Just imagine your products like a family. Different things that all look like they come from the same place.

Best of luck to you on your branding journey!Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-40508386724727782492011-03-10T00:34:00.005-05:002011-03-10T00:44:58.288-05:00Don't Forget to Keep Going<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmmTfM5uJtQ3LRNLBL3n-UhdAC46oXMA79rBIHQgvPDs-NNdzjhsJfv0z3McwkwwglCxjr7vtyVciWDNBai3z6AJJlmFrZ9vG045eZa9OMoY5aYsGJgQjvzdWT229mwElsV7tyODxRoFs/s320/IMG_6624.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582322545154599778" />
My mom asked me the other day why I keep making and adding new stuff to my shop. Isn't 200 items enough? Oh, silly momma! I gave her a thesis statement on the importance of progress and momentum.

I am always looking for new designs and brainstorming new ideas to keep this baby going. Repeat customers want to see new product. They aren't going to buy the same thing twice in most cases. MOMENTUM is the key. Like a snowball down a steep hill. Be the snowball... beeeee the snowball.

The minute you stop moving, it stops moving. Consider your shop a shadow. It is going to follow you where you take it. If you stop in the middle of a field, all confused like, it will stop with you. If you sprint across the field and dance in the sunlight of success (cue awesome metaphor), it will come with you there as well.

Always ask yourself questions!
Where have I been?
Did it work?
Where am I going?
What do I want?
How do I get there?

Just don't stop.... don't ever, ever stop.

PS - I love that friggin' Panda.Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-52424995466272547262011-02-13T23:58:00.002-05:002011-02-14T00:02:53.918-05:00And the winner is....Tracy Taylor! It was fun and I love the music.

Party Favor Magnets
Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-91690254217080578212011-02-03T20:41:00.004-05:002011-02-07T23:42:18.728-05:00Got the itch?
I am so thrilled with the turn out so far on my giveaway! It is called Cute Buttons and it is.... cute. My little magnets are there under consignment, so I didn't really have any expectations for how they would sell. To my surprise, they have done very well. 20+ sets sold over the holidays. I made them, dropped them off and picked up a check. It was nice. I know that consignment can be a shady game, but my experience so far has been great and I am looking for more shops to consign with. I have had wholesale purchases and I am hooked up with a drop shipper, but I have to say I like the consignment thing the best. I make 60% which is better than wholesale, and the shop owner has asked for more magnets already. Everyone is winning here and I am a happy little crafter. Now... if I can just find 5-10 more shops to hook up with :)Stuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3109349229070508077.post-43287187326566704162010-11-21T07:43:00.006-05:002011-02-07T23:40:53.747-05:00500 Sales in 10 Months...and I Need a Nap!
Hi all! I hit 500 sales yesterday!

Here are my top 5 tips to creating a successful shop here in the land of Etsy:

1. Find your niche! Figure out what you want to do and then EDIT it down. Create a product line that is cohesive and specific. Shops that are full of lots of different handmade things are overwhelming for shoppers. Do one thing really well rather than lots of things kinda sorta ok.

2. Create a brand! Find a graphic artist and have them create a logo for you. Use that logo on everything, packaging, business cards, stationary, etc. Soon people will recognize that logo and associate it with your product. Tada, you are a brand! I simply posted my need for a logo in alchemy and found someone who shared my vision. My vision was fat blue birds but I'm guessing yours is different.

3. Work hard! Some people start shops on here, list some stuff and then sit back and wait for sales. Gonna be a long wait, homeslice. This takes WORK. A lot of it. I'm not sure I have worked harder on anything in my life. And I have the excuses, too. I have a full-time day job, a five-year-old daughter, a house to clean... that whole life thing. But I was determined. So, I pretty much gave up sleep for several months. Stuck Together blossomed in the wee hours of the morning for months. Does that suck? Oh yes, total suckfest. But I wanted this to work. I wanted it to work more than I wanted to sleep 8 hours a night. So my nights were spent perfecting pictures, promoting, drafting press releases, facebooking, etc. You have to make time for that stuff... and for me, I had to find time where I thought there was none.

4. Learn how to take a picture! This is still a challenge for me, but I have come a long way. If all those other people can take good pictures, then so can I.. and so can you. I use a light box because most of my pics are taken in the dead of night. Also, use editing software. Crop! For the love of Pete, CROP! If you don't know how to do any of this... learn it. There is info all over the internet about lighting and how to make a homemade light box. Google mofo!

5. Embrace the internet and social networks! I am not a tweeter by nature and I am not really a fan of Facebook. But I use them as a means to an end. I get a lot of traffic from Facebook... therefore I use Facebook. I use the internet to bring people to me. This is where people are... roaming around in cyberspace. They need magnets, I know it. So, find out where your customers are and waggle your tail feather on that corner. There is no shame in self-promotion. If you love your brand, share it proudly with people. How can they love it if you don't?

Hope this stuff helps anyone who may need it. I love Etsy and am so happy to be there... even if it is at 3am.

Peace, love and magnets!
WendyStuck Togetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10822777427332468295noreply@blogger.com2
